Workshop Description:
Young people are important. They are a valuable resource. Youth today are struggling to find their place in our communities. We know what kids need to thrive. There are 40 Development Assets and 5 Relationship Keys to helping children succeed. Each of us plays a role in building the assets of young people. And Developmental relationships are the roots of youth success. When youth experience these relationships with their parents and other adults their outcomes are better, their risk behaviors are lower, and they are more likely to be on the path to become their best selves.
Course Objectives:
This workshop will enable participants to:
1. Identify the 8 categories of the Developmental Assets Framework;
2. Identify 5 critical elements and actions that that make a relationship developmental;
3. Describe how assets empower and protect children and adolescents;
4. Identify each participant’s role in nurturing these assets; and
5. Pinpoint specific, easy, and practical ways to build asset in homes, neighborhoods, schools and the community.
Presenter: Lori Higgins, M.Ed., LSW, OCPC, President & CEO, Envision Partnerships
Lori Higgins is the President/CEO of Envision Partnerships in Southwestern Ohio and has been in behavioral health prevention for 35 years. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Ohio University and her Master’s of Education from Xavier University. She was #24 to be certified in Ohio as a Prevention Consultant in 1989.
She served on the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Association Board for 5 years and was the Editor of the statewide newsletter for 8 years. Ms. Higgins was a part of a team that designed the Addiction Studies in Prevention Certificate for the University of Cincinnati, authored courses and was adjunct faculty. In 2011, she co-authored & published a prevention curriculum focused on low-risk adult alcohol use.
Lori is a certified Trainer of Trainers in multiple evidence-based programs and processes including national master trainer for the SAMHSA’s Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training and Ethics in Prevention. In 2014, she received the state association Prevention Visionary award.
