"The Downside of Social Media" Michael Mercier, Founder and President of Screen Education

Social media applications provide young people with a very gratifying way to channel their innate drive to connect with others socially. However, social media also has its downsides. It can be so addictive that it crowds out the time kids should be spending in healthy face-to-face social interaction. Additionally, there is something about interacting online that makes it very easy for nearly everyone to cross a line and engage in uncivil, hostile social interaction. As a result, the social atmosphere online can often be toxic, and can cause people to take actions that have serious real-life consequences --- bullying, verbal altercations, physical altercations, and attempts at suicide.

Michael Mercier, "The Downside of Social Media" Panel discussion  Scott Rasmus, "State of Butler County Mental Health Services"

"Technology 101" Kim Strong Lytle, Director of School and Juvenile Court Programs, Envision Partnerships

The use of the internet, technology, and gaming is prevalent, especially in young people.  While there are benefits, there are also growing concerns about the impact these activities have on our youth and the society.  This session will explore whether internet usage, social media, technology, and gaming can be harmful and whether the use of these activities can lead to an addiction.  Information and resources will be shared and there will be an opportunity for discussion related to this topic.

"Screenagers" Our Speaker, Alexa Tabb, LCSW, CSAYC

In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

"Building Resilience In Youth" Lori Higgins, President, Envision Partnerships

I Thriving Youth: Meaningful Ways to Impact Youth and Families.  Young people are important. They are a valuable resource. Youth today are struggling to find their place in our communities. We know what kids need to thrive. There are 40 Development Assets and 5 Relationship Keys to helping children succeed. Each of us plays a role in building the assets of young people.

"Social Media 101" What Parents and Teachers Need to Know Stephen Smith, President, A Wired Family

Social Media & The Adolescent Digital Tribe: Navigating The Teen World State
